Our night in the Bat Cave underneath Forbidden Manor was supposed to be just like any other drug trial: we had test subjects and a drug we needed to test. Lycanthropy was nothing like cancer, but that didn’t mean I was in unfamiliar territory, either. I had observed or assisted with drug trials…oh, a few thousand times.

I’d never tried to administer drugs to naked men who shifted shapes while they were fucked by naked women, though.

That would be an interesting diary entry to write once I got home.

When Ofelia was done doing her “thing,” such as it was, Rage introduced me to the test subjects properly—as properly as he could while they were naked. He unchained the men and assembled them near the stairs so we could, in Rage’s words, “get cozy with each other.” I hoped he meant that in a friendly sense and not in the “naked and thrusting” sense.

“This is Ofelia and Cooper.” He said their names as though they were a single entity, individual identities lost or irrelevant against the enormity of their partnership. “They’re mates from Lobo Norte, a town near the Mexican border. Sort of a magical Bermuda Triangle.”

“I’ve never heard of it,” I said. “I’ve never heard of this ‘mating’ thing, either. You say it like it’s something special.”

“It is,” Ofelia said. “Werewolves choose mates for life, and when they mate with a witch like me…” She smiled with no hint of shame, even though her nipples were pointing at me. It was rude to point. “It’s special.”

“I’m sure it is,” I said.

Pierce gave a low laugh. He was preparing the drug samples on a table by the wall while I did the meet and greet. I’d have preferred to switch roles, but at least this particular item of business didn’t require the two of us to stand beside one another. After seeing Ofelia and Cooper together, I wasn’t sure I’d have been able to tolerate his scent up close and personal.

“This is Donne, my mate,” Leah said. The redhead was tiny against Donne’s side. With his mohawk and hard eyes, he looked more like a mercenary hired to protect the girl than her life partner.

His eyes softened when he gazed down at Leah, though. I tightened my jaw and refused to look at Pierce. Refused to think about the fact that men never looked at me like that. The lustful look, yes, but that loving, tender, adoring gaze—that was utterly foreign to me.

“You must be Graham, then,” I said to the final man—the older gentleman with the salt-and-pepper hair. He was one of those men growing more distinguished with age. He reminded me of Harrison Ford at his action-movie peak, so he didn’t look like he belonged with the rockers and sluts at all.

He surprised me by shaking my hand. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Ms. Frost. It means a lot to me that you’ve taken time out of your busy schedule to help with this.”

I tried to warm my smile a fraction.
